  1. Jeff Brown says:

Not sure where I’m to write my story, but here it is in brief. As a young man I was full of fear, doubt, anxiety, extreme-introversion and shyness, anger, suicidal tendencies, even addiction. Somewhere in my mid-twenties, like Howard Beale’s rant in Network, I got as mad as hell and I wasn’t going to take it anymore. After several times of sitting at tops of buildings with legs dangling over the edge perched to jump, sitting in a bar incapacitated by depression and hopelessness staring into space as two girls laughed at me, sitting at home for two days not moving, or being so depressed at jobs I despised I could barely function because of the depression, I knew it was time to take action. So I did.
What did I do? I got the hell out. I got the hell out of myself, the job I hated, even my home state to a new life and way of being. But even before moving out of state to go into standup comedy, of all things, I begin volunteering anytime someone was needed to do so in a public setting. As per usual, I didn’t say anything, just like the time in elementary school a teacher gave me some papers to give to another teacher but I didn’t because there was a class in session and having all those eyes on me was just too much. So what did I do? I put the papers under a bush outside the classroom door. And when the two teachers confronted me about the issue, I did what I normally did: I said nothing at all, whatsoever.
So I moved to Boston away from all family and friends, left behind my ex-fiancé, all my support, and went into the depths of the beast of fear confronting it head-on. In preparing for my first five-minute routine, I practiced hours a day for weeks on end, but when the time came, my fear and anxiety was so extreme within the first minute of performing I forgot everything and just rambled on about nothing. After, I went to the back of the room so low I could have crawled under the belly of a pregnant ant.
So what did I do? I kept doing it and doing it and doing it. I performed in gay bars with straight humor, I performed in South Boston in all-black bars with reverse discrimination, and in biker bars while bikers played pool on the side as I performed. How did I do? Not so well in the gay bar, better in the black bar (especially when I did the dozens on one heckler—you know, ‘your momma’s so . . .’), and killed in the biker bar.
So where am I now? I am lecturer, speaker, author, entrepreneur living 3,000 miles from home (went from Connecticut to Boston to Los Angeles) who can not only speak but have had people tell me after I’ve spoken that “You, my good man, were great!” and “You were great; no, amazing!” I’ve had people honor my by telling me my insights and understanding into human issues are second to none. I had one former student of mine tell me, “Professor Brown, you are the standard by which I judge all other teachers.” I have now dedicated my life as a coach, speaker, author to empowering people letting them know that they are not stuck being who they are that they can change and change comes through awareness, understanding, and by changing one’s way of perceiving and thinking. Napoleon Hill said, “Control your thoughts, control your destiny.” There is no greater truth.
